A PRO, or Performance Rights Organization, administers licensing for public performance of copyrighted musical compositions. All public performance rights in the United States are handled by three agencies - ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. These PROs are separate entities from music publishers, since they only collect on public performances. Songwriters may either register their works directly with their affiliated PRO or register through their publisher.
